The Breaking of Eggs

The Breaking of Eggs • Jim Powell, Orion Books, 2011

The Breaking of Eggs tells the story of Feliks, a communist sympathiser who has spent his life editing a travel guide to Eastern Europe. But change is in the air… As he is reunited with his long-lost brother and comes face-to-face with the love he let slip through his fingers, Feliks has to face up to the possibility that the convictions he has based his life upon were nothing but smoke and mirrors.

Jim Powell has been selected by the BBC Culture Show as one of the UK's best new novelists.

This was a hefty photoshop comping job - combining 4 separate period photographs into this final composition, matching texture and lighting across the whole image.

amazing that it's a composition. Ironically, from a technical standpoint, this was probably the more difficult cover to design from the 3 different ones available—but yet it has a purity and simplicity of concept that the others don't have. In many ways, the other ones look less serious and like you're in for a laugh—this cover makes me feel i will be diving into a serious read—which it seems to be. Interesting to see. All beautiful covers.

Thanks Ian - there was a ton of picture research needed to get the lighting directions matching and then the photoshopping... It's a good read, actually has some very funny moments but also quite poignant and I think the publisher wanted to position this as a more serious literary read this time around.
